The King has bestowed upon our good friend and former Chairman Geof, the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King's Birthday Honours List.

The 47 Royal Marine Commando Association is delighted that Geof Haywood has been awarded the British Empire Medal in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List 2024. His award ‘For Services to Veterans’ recognises not only his work within 47 Royal Marine Commando Association and the Poole & District Branch Royal Marines Association, but the numerous other civilian organisations he represents in the local community.
Speaking about the honour, Geof said:
“I was totally surprised when I received the notification from the Cabinet Office that I was to receive a BEM. My contributions have been as part of a team effort and it’s been a privilege to assist the veterans plus be part of the other community projects. It is humbling that my colleagues have nominated me for this award and I am immensely proud and honoured to receive it on their behalf.”
Bob Perry, Chairman of 47 Royal Marine Commando Association, said: “We are all incredibly proud of Geof and are thrilled that his hard work and dedication has been recognised at such a high level. This honour is a tribute to his outstanding support to our veterans and their families over many years, but also for his inspiring service to the local community and selfless commitment to others.”
The Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) is awarded for ‘hands on’ active involvement in the local community that has made a significant, positive difference to people’s lives. Further news regarding Geof’s Royal Marines career and his service to the 47 Royal Marine Commando Association, the Poole & District Branch Royal Marines Association, Shooting for the Blind and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
