A new chapter for the Royal Marines has begun, and to signify their daring modernisation, 3 Commando Brigade will now be officially recognised as the UK Commando Force, as declared by His Majesty The King.
The brigade was established on 1 September 1943 in Dorchester using personnel from the 102 RM Brigade during the Second World War, comprising a combination of Royal Marine Commando and Army Commando units.
The Commando Force transformation began in 2017 with 3 Commando Brigade – Marines, Army, and Navy Commandos – modernising tactics and operations for combat in challenging environments, incorporating cutting-edge technologies.
Since then, they have added new crewed and uncrewed systems, including drones, and invested in weaponry, surveillance, digital communications, and new battlefield vehicles.
Inspired by their history in special operations, the Commando Force reorganised for modern battlefields requiring dispersal, reach, endurance, and self-sufficiency.
The 3 Commando Brigade, renowned since post-World War 2, the Falklands War, and Middle East conflicts, remains integral to Royal Marines history. Its new name, reflecting the modern era, was announced by His Majesty The King at a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

His Majesty praised the Royal Marines' adaptability to any environment and announced the renaming of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines to the United Kingdom Commando Force.
UKCF - Special Operations Force
3 Commando Brigade was rebranded to the United Kingdom Commando Force (UKCF), a process that started in 2020 and completed in 2024.
General Sir Gwyn Jenkins highlighted that this change signifies a decade of transformation, evolving from a high-readiness amphibious brigade to a modern, globally deployed Commando Force, equipped for 21st-century warfare, providing versatile, technologically advanced strike teams.
