August 18th 1942 was the Dieppe Raid aka 'Operation Jubilee'. more than 6000 Allied troops took part, nearly 5000 of whom were Canadian, around 60% of those that landed were either KIA, wounded or captured. Only 236 returned unhurt. This photo was taken 80 years ago today on the 19th August 1942, among those shown is Mne John Hampton DCM, former RMA Poole and District Branch member, sadly no longer with us, buried at St Laurence Church, Upwey, near Weymouth. John took part in just about every major landing in WW2, Dieppe, North Africa Op Torch, Sicily Op Husky, Italy Op Avalanche, Normandy Op Neptune and finally Op Matador in the Far East.
