A MUSICAL SPECTACULAR - A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

Updated: 3 days ago

A group of RMA members, some in green berets and military attire, pose at the start of an RM Portsmouth Band concert at the Lighthouse Poole

RMA Poole Branch members were out in force on Thursday evening (26 February) at The Lighthouse Poole Arts Centre to enjoy a fabulous evening of music from the Portsmouth based Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines.

Director of Music Captain Trevor Naughton RM met with Branch members before the concert for a photo call and was pleased to provide a preview of the music programme and also to learn more about our Branch and the nature of Poole as a hub for serving Royal Marines and veterans.

The quality of the music was second to none and included; arrangements of classic pieces from the ages, modern interpretations, traditional Sunset and RN & RM marching tunes. Also a Big Band section and several amazing solo performances on trombone, clarinet, saxophone and even a piano set of Billy Joel hits were performed. Not forgetting the immaculate precision of The Corps of Drums!

The Royal Marines Band Portsmouth performs on stage at the Lighthouse Poole. The conductor stands in front of the band.

Director of Music Trev Naughton was supported in his conducting by soon to be Warrant Officer First Class Lisa Keachie RM and Band Corporal Peter Gibson RM.

This was the third concert in a “close to home tour” with earlier performances in Worthing and the Isle of Wight. Trevor explained that these performances were self generated and not part of the big sponsored events like Mountbatten Festival of Music. This did reflect in what felt like a more relaxed and convivial and fun atmosphere from the band members and an opportunity for Trev to practice some of his jokes.

This concert really hit the mark in achieving our objectives of promoting the ethos, traditions and esprit de corps amongst our Branch members. The Portsmouth Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines is certainly maintaining the highest standards of the Corps. Trevor said that they will be back next year and we will look out for the date.

Thanks Paul a well written article and a great night had by all. I met many members of our Corps and I approach many trying to encourage them to join the branch. A number were local but many had travelled from as far as Bristol, Bath and Reading.
